Homestay
UP Education and our partner Host Families NZ make sure all homestays are safe and suitable for our students. Each home is inspected, and families are interviewed before students are placed with the, and regularly visited during students’ stay to ensure their experience remains positive and complied with the Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021.
Accommodation
A homestay is a great way to start your New Zealand experience. It literally means 'staying at home' with a New Zealand family. We recommend that all international students choose to live in a homestay for at least their first three months in New Zealand.
The benefits of a homestay
Safety. The homestay family can help you find your way around the city and give advice on living in New Zealand.
English practice. Talking to your homestay family improves your vocabulary and helps clarity of speech, an important part of living and studying in an English-speaking country.
Routine. You will have regular meals and a daily routine. Study requires energy and focus, so it’s important that you eat a regular and balanced diet of healthy home-cooked food.
Under 18 international students
If you are started your enrolment under 18 years of age, it’s important for you and your parents or legal guardians to read the information below.
For the safety and support of under 18 international students, your providers may conduct regular meetings with you, and concerns may be communicated to your parents or legal guardians.
Under 18 international students must live in a homestay, a designated caregiver, or parent(s). You may not live in any other type of accommodation while you are under 18 and all accommodation type is subject to the approval of the education provider.

Sonder Student Safety App
We have partnered with Sonder, a 24/7 personal safety and wellbeing service, to support all our international students. The Sonder app is for personal devices and has a number of features, like “Track My Journey” and “Check on Me”, that will help students live and study in New Zealand with confidence - if you are walking alone at night, going on a first date, or meeting up with a stranger to buy or sell goods, for example.
Additionally, if you are feeling stressed, anxious, lonely, or simply don't know who to turn to, you can speak to Sonder’s multilingual support team anytime via live chat or phone, and they can even send in-person assistance if you need it. You will receive an activation email or text shortly before orientation. If you don't get your email or text, you will be given a code to use at orientation.

Complaint
The Code signatories are required to have formal processes for handling learner complaints. If you have concerns about your education provider or agent, you should try and resolve it by using the internal provider process in the first instance which outlined in the Student Handbook. If your complaint is not resolved, you can take your complaint to NZQA who will process the complaint. NZQA is a government organisation, and they can provide an independent assessment of the complaint.
